Art and Design at Shrewsbury Sixth Form College

Course description

If you love Art and Design and want a creative career then this is the course for you. It is tailor-made to equip you with the skills, experience and confidence to study Art & Design at Higher Education or to get acreative job. The course is fun, challenging and very hard work, but it will help you decide which part of the art and design industry you’d like to work in. The course is highly regarded by the leading UK colleges, Universities and employers, and in over 100 countries worldwide.

You will experiment with drawing, painting, print-making and photography. You will explore digital imaging alongside traditional techniques. Projects will involve two and threedimensional making and you’ll also have the opportunity to develop time-based animation and video work. There will be a focus on contemporary art and culture, installation and performance, conceptual art, video, fashion and media, graphic design and illustration amongst others. There are nine Units in Year One (Diploma), with a further four in-depth Units in Year Two, (Extended Diploma).

You will keep detailed journals and sketchbooks. You will collect and evaluate a range of sources to enhance the work you are making. You will develop your critical abilities in understanding and making a critique of contemporary and historical art practice. There will be gallery visits and practical workshops to attend. There is a program of visiting artists who share interesting insights into their working methods and ideas. The course is studio-based allowing you to develop personal projects which build the portfolio evidence necessary for interview at Higher Education or employment.

To really enjoy the course you must have an enquiring mind. You must be willing to push yourself to make new and unexpected creative work.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at C grade or above including an Art & Design subject.

Where a suitable Art and Design subject has not been awarded, a portfolio of creative work may be provided as evidence of suitability.
