Applied Science BTEC Level 3 at Oasis Academy Shirley Park

Course description

A level 3 btec in science is well recognised as a pathway to university, jobs in the science and health industries. It is heavily geared towards work in industry and is desgined to prepare students for work in the scientific and medical fields. It is popular as it has a sizeable coursework element but now includes an exam consistenting of a portion of the AS level chemistry, physics and Biology content. The new NQF Btecs requrie a consistent level of work across the two years to achieve the top grades needed to access the next level in your education or career.

The course is broken into units that include aspects of all the three sciences (Physics, Biology and Chemistry). Coursework units contain a number of asignments students will have to complete by a set date. Many assignments require students to become profficent with a range of scientiific techniques through their practical work sessions. Students who are not on track by the end of year 12 may be denied entry to year 13.

Course content

Unit 2: Practical scientific procedures and techniques Four pracitical assignments which are marked and moderated internally each covering a different practical technique

We teach the Btec level 3 extended certificate in Applied Science over two years which is worth the same as one A-level. Levels of achievement are based on a combination of hard work (you need to complete more to achieve higher grades) and managing tasks of increasing difficulty. A Distinction* is accepted by most universities as the equivalent to an A* at A-level, a distinction to an A grade, a merit to a C and a pass to an E. You get much more out (in terms of achievement and University UCAS points) the more work you put in.

Entry requirements

To enrol on the course students need to obtain at least a C grade in Core Science and a C or above in Maths and English. We will accept students with a Distinction on a Level 2 Btec in Science.
