French AS/A Level at Ysgol Emrys Ap Iwan

Course description

This course is designed to encourage students to communicate confidently in a variety of contexts, develop an understanding of the cultural background and heritage of countries where the language is spoken.

Course content

AS Topics:
Leisure and Lifestyle including travel and tourism, sports, entertainment, customs, traditions, healthy living – health and nutrition, diet and exercise; unhealthy living – drugs, aids, smoking, alcohol etc.

The Individual and Society, including relationships and responsibilities, gender issues, youth culture, education and future careers

A Level Topics:
Environmental Issues, including technology, pollution, global warming, transport, energy, renewable energies, recycling and sustainability.

Social and Political Issues, including the role of the media, racism, immigration, terrorism, world of work.

Entry requirements

A*- C in GCSE French.

Assessment

AS
Unit 1: 15 minutes oral exam consisting of a topic based conversation and a general conversation. 60 marks
Unit 2: Listening, Reading and Writing 2½ hours 98 marks

A Level
Unit 3: 20 minutes oral exam (60 marks) consisting of a structured discussion based on a short written stimulus and an oral exposé on an area of the Guided Studies Option.
Unit 4: Listening, Reading and Writing 3 hours 98 marks.

Future opportunities

Potential future use includes studying French at university or using the language in a vocational or employment setting.
