Complementary Therapies (Level 3) at New College Swindon

Course description

This Level 3 qualification will give you practitioner level skills in complementary therapies that will prepare you for employment in the holistic industry sector. Within this qualification you will develop a sound knowledge and understanding of anatomy, physiology and pathology along with health and safety for complementary therapies. You will gain insight into how the industry works, how to prepare the treatment area, dealing with clients using specialist consultation techniques, planning and carrying out in depth massage, aromatherapy and reflexology treatments. You will be based in Distinction Salons within the college where you will study all aspects of this higher level course in significant detail.

The qualification provides opportunities for those with intentions of progressing into employment, freelance work or to level 4 qualifications within the sector.

Course content

You will complete the course over one year with much of this time spent developing your practical skills in our dedicated therapy suite. You will also learn the essential underpinning knowledge of for each unit.

The units are

  • Principles and practice of complementary therapies
  • Business practice for complementary therapies
  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Body Massage
  • Reflexology
  • Aromatherapy

In addition you will study extra qualifications to support your main course aim and have the opportunity to work in realistic settings, giving you a fantastic opportunity to carry out treatments.

You will also undertake the level 2 award in Salon Reception duties as an additional qualification during the course.

Entry requirements

As a level 3 course you will be expected to hold a minimum of 5 grade C GCSE’s including English and maths. Have recognised industry qualifications in the Holistic/Beauty sector and a record of good time management. We welcome applications from adult learners with prior subject knowledge at the required level and from those who wish to refresh their skills.

You should have a genuine interest in working in the Complementary Therapy Sector. As part of the course you will practise all services with other learners, so you should be prepared to take part in giving and receiving all therapy treatments. You will be expected to meet the high standards of personal presentation and demonstrate a professional manner and appearance as required by this industry.


The qualification is assessed mainly through a portfolio of practical and written work. The Anatomy and Physiology unit will require you to sit two externally set on-line exams to show knowledge of the unit. You will work closely with your tutor, who will regularly check and discuss your progress.

In addition you will study extra qualifications to support your main course aim and have the opportunity to work in realistic settings with clients. Please be aware to support your qualification aims some units may require you to bring in clients to practise specific treatments prior to assessment.

There are a significant number of case studies and portfolio building activities required to complete this qualification some of which will need to be carried out in your own time outside the college.
