Information and Communication Technology (ICT) - AS and A Levels at Coleg Sir Gar

Course description

  • The theory will be assessed through a written paper in May
  • Project work based on everyday applications, such as Word Processing, Desk Top Publishing, Presentations, Databases and Spreadsheets.
  • AS Level can be taken without prior study of the subject

Course content

ICT sets out to extend the students conception of the effects and limitations of information and communication technology and understanding of the new opportunities it provides within organisations and society.

Entry requirements

ICT can be taken at AS Level with GCSE ICT or equivalent. Normally students 16 - 19 years of age will require a minimum of 6 GCSEs at grades A* - C including Maths and English. Entry for mature students without formal qualifications is at the discretion of the Faculty.

Assessment

AS Level: One written paper - 2hrs 15min. Practical project based on generic software. A2 Level: One written paper - 2hr 30min. Practical project based on generic software.

Future opportunities

A Levels provide an excellent basis for progression to higher level qualifications such as degrees or Higher National Diplomas. Virtually all employers need IT professionals. Most large organisations have their own specialist IT departments and there are opportunities for IT specialists in every employment sector including, Manufacturing, Retailing, Financial Services, Transportation and Public Bodies.
