Course description

The Hair and Beauty Diploma at level 1 is an ideal qualification as an introduction into the exciting world of Hair and Beauty. This course will develop skills in both industries. It will also help to develop personal skills and qualities essential for working in these sectors including; self confidence, customer service learn, personal presentation, communication.
This is a foundation level qualification and is intended to give a rounded introduction to the industry, without requiring or proving occupation competence.

Course content

Manditory Units
01 Ensure responsibility for actions to reduce the risks to health & Safety.
02 Contribute to the development of effective working relationships.
03 Shampoo and condition hair.
04 Prepare for hair services and maintain work areas.
061 Prepare and maintain salon treatment work areas.
Optional Units
005 Assist with salon reception duties.
006 Blow dry hair
007 Assist with hair colouring services.
009 Plait and twist hair using basic techniques.
062 Assist with facial skin care treatments
063 Assist with day make-up

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for candidates undertaking these qualifications. The course is intended for learners who may have completed the VRQ Level 1 at school and need a bridging course before starting NVQ level 2.


Both practical and theoretical assessments are needed. Practical assessments take place in the salons and treatment rooms. Theory will be assessed by producing assignments, pass, merit and distinction will available, dependant on the level of understanding shown.

Future opportunities

Upon completion of the Level 1 Diploma in Hair and Beauty, you will be asked to choose either a hairdressing route or a beauty therapy route to progress to;
VRQ 2 Diploma Hairdressing or VRQ 2 Diploma Beauty Therapy.

How will I learn?

Students will learn practical hair and beauty skills in our state of the art salons and treatment rooms following a structured delivery using both demonstration and practice. Theory will be delivered using online resources, group work, one to one supervision and fun interactive activities.
