BTEC LEVEL 3 NATIONAL EXTENDED CERTIFICATE IN APPLIED SCIENCE at The Lenham School

Course description

The BTEC level 3 National is a practical, work related course that will provide you with an introduction to working in the Applied Science and allied industries. The requirements of the qualification will mean that you develop the transferable skills which are valued by higher education providers and employers. For example, when studying Unit 3: Science Investigation Skills, you will develop skills including how to plan investigations and how to collect, analyse, present data and then communicate results. The two year qualification is equivalent in size to one A Level and aims to give a coherent introduction to study of the Applied Science sector. In addition, the qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as contributing to meeting admission requirements for many courses. The BTEC can be taken as part of a diverse programme, leaving progression options fully open. The BTEC in Applied Science could be taken as part of a programme of study that includes other level 3 qualifications such as Sport and Health & Social Care.

Assessment

Assessment Method:

The course is unit based and each unit is given a credit value depending on the number of guided learning hours. Assessment is through external examination and the building of portfolios. All units which are internally assessed are also externally verified by the Examination board. For internally assessed units you will receive an assignment brief detailing the tasks and criteria to be met. At the end of each unit you will be given a grade of pass, merit or distinction with written feedback about how to progress to the next level. Portfolios can be tailored towards different disciplines based on your personal area of choice. Before the production of each portfolio you will be given all the necessary information, but the grade you obtain will be dependent on the quality of work you produce.
