Geography AS & A Level at Coloma Convent Girls' School

Course description

The Geography A Level course enables students to engage with the relationship of human populations to each other over space and time. It allows them to study the relationship between human populations with their physical environment at a variety of scales from the local to the global. Students consider their own role in relation to themes and issues being studied and the roles, values and attitudes of others including decision makers.

Entry requirements

The chosen pathway requirements and at least Grade B in GCSE Geography.

Students should have an interest in current affairs and be prepared to read around the subject in a wide range of areas such as geopolitics, natural disasters, hydrology and the economics of geography. Students must be willing to read a variety of newspapers, journals, magazines and internet articles in order to keep up to date with the fast moving changes in both the physical and human geographical context. A good level of ICT skills is helpful, as is the ability to work dynamically in groups, individually and within group discussions.

Geography students should have a high level of written work, as well as a firm grip on basic maths, in order to fully understand, analyse and critically evaluate both written and statistical information.

AS examination

  • Component 1: Physical geography and the people and the environment - 50% of AS marks
  • Component 2: Human geography and geography fieldwork investigation- 50% of AS marks

A level examination

  • Component 1: Physical geography - 40% of A level marks
  • Component 2: Human geography - 40% of A level marks
  • Component 3: Geography fieldwork investigation - 20% of A level marks

Future opportunities

The specification follows an issues and impacts approach to contemporary Geography that is suitable for all students. This mirrors the real world process for decision making, giving the students the skills they need to achieve success in both higher education and a variety of career paths.
