Business Studies Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma at Airedale Academy
This is a two-year vocational course comprising the BTEC Extended Diploma qualification in Business which is equivalent to three A Levels.
This qualification encourages in depth study of Business in the modern workplace and gives an insight into its role in specialist careers. The majority of this course is continually assessed through coursework, based on the practical skills and knowledge required to succeed in a Business career.
Students will study a wide range of units. Some of these could include:
Business Studies – Developing a Marketing Campaign, Personal Busiess and Finance, managing an Event, International Business, Principles of Management, creative Promotion, Work Experience in Business, Digital Marketing.
As well as many more.
5 A*-C GCSE (or equivalent) passes including English and Maths. It may be possible, following discussion at interview, for some students to re-take one or both of these subjects alongside the BTEC qualifications.
The majority of units are internally assessed, and then externally moderated. A selection of units are externally assesed. Ongoing assessments and moderation can take place at any time. All individual units are graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction. Awards and certificates are graded in the same way. For students taking individual units, each unit is certificated separately. Full award certificates will be issued where appropriate.
What are the costs?
You may have to pay for certain optional trips, and you will need access to a computer and the internet at home. We will supply other necessary materials.
Some support is available for students facing financial difficulties. A guaranteed bursary of £1200 per year is available for young people in care, care leavers and those students on income support. Subject to funding levels, students who are entitled to Free School Meals or fit the schools bursary criteria, may also be able to access some funding to support expenses related to their course. For more details, please speak to the Head of Sixth Form.
The course is firmly based in the ‘real world’ of business and encourages students to think about how what they are learning can be applied in practice by relating teaching and assessment to real organisations. This qualification can lead to Higher Education, apprenticeships, or employment in a range of occupational areas.
Over the last three years, following our fabulous results, our Year 13 students successfully went on to a variety of University courses including: Business with IT, Business Administration, Events Management, Retail Management, combined honours and Social Work. Students have successfully progressed to Russell Group Universities through this course.
Most of our Year 12 students are also currently studying The Progression Module through Leeds Metropolitan University. This qualification guides students through careers and HE applications and holds UCAS points which can be used towards entry to selected Universities.
We are also in the process of developing a network of work experience placements in suitable areas to support this course and hope that in the next year all students will be able to access at least 30 hours of work experience.
Students are offered opportunities to experience Business through trips and visits. For example a recent trip to London took in the Bank Of England and Chelsea Football Club where students looked at areas such as business finance, as well as visiting the West End to take in a show and visit attractions such as the London Eye and Madame Tussaud's.
Our pastoral system is very strong at Airedale. When surveyed 98% of year 13 students said that they felt well supported and guided in their progress into careers, HE or an apprenticeship.
