Travel, Tourism & Cabin Crew BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma at Macclesfield College

Course description

This is an exciting new study programme which combines two qualifications and is aimed specifically at highly motivated individuals who wish to enter the cabin crew industry. The course provides an excellent and varied programme giving you underpinning travel and tourism knowledge and also enables you to develop a range of skills, techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in the Cabin Crew industry and support progression into employment within this sector. These qualifications have been developed in conjunction with employers to ensure that the content reflects the requirements of initial cabin crew training courses.

Course content

Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Travel and Tourism 
You will study a total of six units throughout the one year of this course. Four core units will provide a general foundation and three specialist units will introduce you to particular topics in more depth.

Units will include:

  • Investigating the travel and tourism sector 
  • The business of travel and tourism 
  • The UK as a destination
  • Customer service in travel and tourism 

Level 2 Certificate in Introduction to Cabin Crew 
During this course you will study the following six units which will cover a range of essential elements in cabin crew:

  • Working as cabin crew
  • Airline health, safety and security
  • Aircraft emergency situations 
  • Dealing with passengers on-board an aircraft
  • Cabin service – selling technique 
  • Making passenger announcements on-board an aircraft 

Also you will have the opportunity to undertake an Emergency First Aid at work qualification. 

Alongside your main programme of study you will also study either GCSE or Functional Skills in English and Maths if you have not achieved a GCSE grade A*-C. If you have achieved a grade C or above in English and Maths then you will engage in extending these skills through industry based activity.

Entry requirements

You will need to achieve;

  • A minimum of 4 GCSEs Grade A*-C, ideally including English Language or
  • A Level 2 qualification (e.g. BTEC Level 2 Diploma) at Pass grade or above. A GCSE Geography qualification would also be advantageous 

Following your application to study this course you will be invited to attend an admissions interview with a member of the teaching team to discuss the course and its requirements further.

Assessment

Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Travel and Tourism 
All BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma units are assessed through project and assignment work. There are no external examinations. Each unit is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction and then an overall grade of Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction* is awarded on completion. 

Level 2 Certificate in Introduction to Cabin Crew 
You will be assessed by a combination of project and assignment work including presentations, essays and practical observations.

GCSE and Functional Skills qualifications are assessed through external examination and portfolio work.

Financial information

You will have the opportunity to take part in travel, educational and industrial visits both here and abroad during your course programme. A financial contribution of £450.00 per year towards the cost of the visits is to be paid during each year’s first term. Possible visits may include Paris, Bruges and airlines but could be subject to change. 

Future opportunities

The BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma is equivalent to one A Level and can attract a maximum of 140 UCAS points. On successful achievement of this course you may:

  • Pursue career opportunities in the travel and tourism sector within tour operations, airlines, cruises and business travel
  • Apply to work on a range of airlines applying the cabin crew knowledge you have acquired
