Philosophy and Ethics AS/A2 Level at The Helena Romanes School and Sixth Form Centre

Course description

Philosophy and Ethics is one of the most demanding and rewarding courses on offer. It is an excellent preparation both for university and for life, training you in skills of independent thought, logical argument and creative problem solving.

Philosophy and Ethics is also great fun! You have the opportunity to discuss some of the deepest questions of life in a non-threatening and prejudice-free environment.

Course content

Unit 1 Foundations (AS)

Arguments for the existence of God; the problem of evil; the debate about miracles; controversies about the relationship between morality and religion; utilitarianism and situation ethics; sexual ethics; war and peace.


Unit 2 Investigations (AS)

Students choose a topic that interests them in set areas of Philosophy or Ethics. They spend the year researching it and refining their views about it. Then they answer a question on it in the examination.


Unit 3 Developments (A2)

More arguments for the existence of God; atheism; life after death; and the debate about religious language. More ethical theories; a study of ethical language; key ethical concepts.


Unit 4 Synoptic (A2)

A study of sources in an anthology of philosophical texts to do with religion and human experience. The examination consists of a passage taken from the anthology and a question about it.

Entry requirements

In order to study Philosophy at A level you must have achieved 5 GCSEs A* - C.

In addition, to study this subject you must have a C in English Language, English Literature and Maths.

Future opportunities

The majority of students go on to University to study a variety of degrees.

Others find that the open-minded, inquiring approach to beliefs, opinions and issues prepares them for a wide range of career paths.
