Physical Education at Felixstowe Academy

Course description

The A-Level course builds on the students experience of GCSE PE at Key Stage 4. Students will show a further depth of knowledge and understanding of the factors that affect performance and participation in Physical Education.

It will develop the roles in a variety of sports such as performer, official and leader. In this course you will address current contemporary topics in sport such as the impact in the use of ergogenic aids, technology and increasing commercialisation in sport.

Course content

AS Unit 1

2 hour written paper 60% of A/S mark.

Opportunities for and the effects of leading a healthy and active lifestyle

AS Unit 2

Analysis and evaluation of a physical activity as a performer or other role. Internally assessed.

A2 Unit 3

2 hour written paper

Optimising performance and evaluating contemporary issues in sport.

A2 Unit 4

Optimising practical performance in a competitive situation.

Entry requirements

5 GCSE A* - C including Science, Maths and English. If students have studied GCSE PE, they must have achieved a Grade B on the Full course.

Students are also expected to be playing a sport competitively outside of school.

How is the course taught?

The course will be taught both practically and theoretically with concentration on exam technique in every lesson.

There is an emphasis on personal study and reading outside of lessons. There will also be a text book to assist with personal study.
