Course description

The benefits of success at AS and A Level in Mathematics are many. Students qualified at these levels in Mathematics are in great demand by universities and employers alike. Mathematics is an extremely useful support subject, helping students of Sciences and Social Science to understand their world.

Course content

  •   To enable students to gain confidence, satisfaction and enjoyment from their studies
  •   To give experience of Mathematical activity and develop skills in problem solving
  •   To help students apply Mathematics and see its importance in other disciplines
  •   To develop Mathematical reasoning
  •   To provide a basis for further study in MathematicsCOURSE CONTENT
    Core 1 (C1) Algebra and functions; coordinate geometry in the (x,y) plane; sequences and series; differentiation and integration. CORE 1 IS A NON- CALCULATOR EXAM

    Core 2 (C2) More algebra and functions; coordinate geometry in the (x,y) plane; sequences and series; trigonometry; exponentials and logarithms; differentiation and integration

    Statistics 1 (S1) Mathematical models in probability and statistics; representation and summary of data; probability; correlation and regression; discrete random variables; discrete distributions; the Normal distribution

    And in Year 13,

    Core 3 Algebra and functions; trigonometry; exponentials and logarithms; Differentiation, numerical methods

    Core 4 Algebra; coordinate geometry in the (x,y) plane; series; differentiation Integration; vectors

    Mechanics 1

    Mathematical models in mechanics; vectors in mechanics; kinematics of a particle moving in a straight line; dynamics of a particle moving in a straight line or plane; statics of a particle; moments.


6 x 11⁄2 hour exams : 3 at the end of Yr 12, 3 at the end of Yr 13.
