Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) at Appleby Grammar School
A free standing Level 3 qualification which is worth half an A-level. The qualification is graded A*- E through the preparation and presentation of an individual project and attracts UCAS tariff points. It is an opportunity to research a topic of the student’s own choosing, perhaps developing their understanding of future career options as well as testing a wider variety of skills, and preparing students for the rigour of university
Students who are aiming to go to university should seriously consider this course as not only will it potentially increase their portfolio of qualifications, but it will also develop their independent thinking skills, research skills, analytical and critical thinking skills, as well as their argumentation and essay writing skills – essential skills for university.
Students are taught the necessary skills (research, report writing, project planning, referencing etc). Students agree an area of research or a project with the tutor, and produce a project submission for approval. Students work independently on their project with some support from a mentor. Students must research and produce a 5000 word report or make a product/artefact.
We have had a wide range of projects researched in the past, covering, for example, legal topics, problems facing midwives or the role of occupational therapists.
GCSEs A*-C and personal recommendation from Head of Sixth Form.
Admissions Tutors have already indicated that they would look favourably on students who have completed this qualification. This would also be valued by employers, as it demonstrates the ability to work largely unsupervised.
