Product Design A Level at Seven Kings School

Course description

This course offers students the opportunity to study, propose and realise prototype solutions closely linked to the real world of product manufacture in a range of material areas. 

Course content

Students will be expected to demonstrate innovation and flair when working with concepts and materials; develop an understanding of contemporary design and technologies practices and consider the uses and effects of new technologies and modern materials.

The course comprises of the following four units:

AS Product Design F521 Advanced Innovation Challenge

Students take part in a timed design challenge based on a pre-released theme, under examination conditions. 

F522 The Product Study

Students to investigate an existing product in-depth, resulting in suggestions for improvements. Throughout this module students learn a variety of skills focused upon improving their understanding of researching, designing, developing, testing and evaluating a proposed product.

A2 Product Design F523 Design, Make & Evaluate

An extensive major project which allows students to demonstrate their designing, making and evaluative skills. 

F524 Product Design

This is a written paper that consists of two components

Entry requirements

In order to study 4 subjects at A Level you must have at least 5 A*-As in your GCSEs (A 7 or better counts as one of these)

In order to study 3 subjects at A Level and 1 subject at AS Level you must have at least 6 A*-Bs in your GCSEs (A 6 or better counts as one of these)

In order to study 3 subjects at A Level you must have at least 5 A*-Bs in your GCSEs (A 6 or better counts as one of these)

You must have as a minimum of a 5 or above in English Language and Maths

In order to study a subject at A Level you must have at least a grade B (or a 5) in the subject at GCSE:

To study Accounts you must have a at least a 5 in maths

To study Economics you must have a 5 or above in GCSE English Language

To study Maths you need a 7 in GCSE Maths.  Further Maths will be available to those students who have achieved an 8 at GCSE; if you take Further Maths you will also study an AS level in Maths in another option block, so this means 2 Maths AS levels

To study AS Music you need a Grade 5 in an instrument

To study PE you must have at least a B grade in Core Science

To study Psychology you must have at least 5 in English Language and a B Core Science

To study computer science you must have studied it t GCSE and obtained a B grade

To study 1 Science you must have at least a B grade in the subject chosen and additional science students need at least a B grade on average across the exam elements of their course

To study 2 or more Sciences you must have As in those subjects and combined science students will need As in those subjects chosen

To study Physics you also need a 6 or above in Maths

In order to study a subject you have not previously studied at GCSE you must have at least a 5 in English Language or at least a GCSE grade B in a humanity subject

Future opportunities

Product Design leads to opportunities in engineering, architecture, construction industry, product development, marketing, automotive design, and various design related disciplines.
