Psychology AS Level (AQA) at Lightcliffe Academy

Course description

Psychology - AS Overview: Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour and experience. For example; psychologists may be interested in why people behave in an aggressive way and how the person feels when they are behaving aggressively. During the course, we will study different areas of psychology, including abnormal behaviour, the importance of relationships in childhood, memory, why we conform and obey, the relationship between stress and illness and research methods. Units: Two units for AS and a further two units for A Level: AS Unit 1 - Memory, attachment and research methods - One and a half hour exam. AS Unit 2 - Stress, Abnormality and Social Psychology - One and a half hour exam. Assessment: Two exams (one in January and one in May).

Future opportunities

You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Psychology, which could lead you onto higher education to study Psychology or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to Psychology including medicine, nursing, human resources and teaching. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for. You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses such as a science or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Psychology, which could lead you onto higher education to study Psychology or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to Psychology and people such as a Counsellor, Nurse or Psychologist. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
