'A' LEVEL MEDIA STUDIES at Selby College

Course description

Media Studies is mainly an analytical course that gives you the opportunity to study the contribution mass media makes to the understanding of the world in which we live.

Media Studies is an academically challenging subject. If you are interested in media and popular culture, then this course is ideal.

If you are considering this course you should already be engaging with media texts on a personal level.

It is not necessary to have studied media previously, but if the subject was taken at school you should have achieved at least Grade 4.

Course content

You will study a range of media, including:

  • Advertising
  • Television and Film
  • Magazines & Newspapers

In addition, the course examines the debates and issues surrounding audience – how the media select and address their audience, as well as the role of stereotyping, ideology and the use of semiotics (signs and their meanings).

This is not a media production course, but there is a production element in that you will be required to use Adobe Premiere and Illustrator for the practical coursework elements.

Entry requirements

Standard 'A' Level entry requirements apply.

Assessment

70% Exam, 30% Coursework.

Future opportunities

On successful completion, you may go on to study Media-related Degrees at university such as Journalism and Cultural Studies. A Media qualification can lead to employment in many fields including Teaching, Marketing and Journalism to name but a few.
