Art and Design A-Level at Harris Boys' Academy East Dulwich
The first half of the Advanced GCE course may be completed as an AS Level and credited. Students may continue into year two and take the full Advanced GCE qualification. Year one is made up of two units.
Unit 1: Personal Investigation
In this unit, students will have opportunities to generate and develop ideas, research primary and contextual sources and record practical and written observations. They will experiment with media and processes and refine their ideas towards producing resolved outcomes. At the beginning of the unit there is a short induction course to familiarise students with a range of working processes and good practice.
Unit 2: Externally Set Assignment
The paper consists of one broad-based thematic starting point. Students will develop preparation over a period of time and sit a ten hour examination under controlled conditions.
Students require a grade B or above in Art and Design GCSE, and at least a C grade in English GCSE. Students maybe invited in for interview with a portfolio of artwork.
50% of marks come from the Personal Investigation unit; 50% of marks come from the Externally Set Assignment unit. Both units are assessed at the centre and then externally moderated.
Progression to Higher Level Courses in Art and Design is normally through application to a Foundation course at Art College before applying to a degree course in a specialist area. Studying Art and Design for its own sake develops transferable skills, which can take you into employment. Success at this level requires determination and dedication.
