Biology A Level at Consett Academy

Course description

Life! To put it simply.

Biology explores the structure, function and interaction of living organisms and their environments. You will explore life from a whole ecosystems down to the smallest biological molecules and consider what controls life, from DNA in cells to predation and the weather.

Within the subject, students will be encouraged to analyse, interpret and correlate information.

Biology is an interesting yet demanding subject, requiring all kinds of practical, creative and evaluative skills

Course content

You will study a variety of topics including; biological molecules, cells, genetics, processes within organisms, environment, evolution and ecosystems.


Entry requirements

  • GCSE Biology with at least a grade B or Double Award (Science and Additional Science) with at least a grade B
  • GCSE Mathematics with at least a grade B


The new A level course is assessed through examined units and monitored practical standards.

Future opportunities

Biology AS Level can open the door to numerous educational and career pathways with many not in the Biological Sciences.

Degrees in Biological subjects would include Genetics, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmaceuticals and many others.

Careers vary from Researchers, Doctors, Physiotherapy, and Environmental Engineering. Other avenues include Law, Media, Management, Administration, Education, Accountancy, IT and Agriculture.
