History A Level at Coombeshead Academy
The topics in Papers 1 and 2 are linked thematically and share the same content for
AS and A Level. The examinations have the same structure, but the A Level papers
are more demanding.
We are studying Route F ‘Searching for rights and freedoms in the twentieth
Paper 1 - a breadth study with interpretations.
In search of the American Dream: the USA 1917-96.
Paper 2 – an in depth study: India 1914-48: the road to independence.
Paper 3 (A Level) - changes over time.
Rebellion and disorder under the Tudors: 1485-1603.
The final A Level component is coursework. Students complete an independently
researched enquiry on historical interpretations.
Grade B or above in History is preferred.
AS Level: Paper 1 (60%) Paper 2 (40%).
A Level: Paper 1 (30%), Paper 2 (20%), Paper 3 (30%).
Coursework (20%). Assessment: 3,000-4,000 word essay.
History is a very popular and well-respected A Level and is acceptable to all
universities and colleges. It is essential to take A Level History if wishing to study
History to degree level.
In addition, its development of skills, attention to detail and study in depth make it
useful for many other degree courses such as Politics, Economics, Law, Philosophy,
Social Studies and Business.
History students offer employers a great deal, since they have become
independent learners and thinkers who have developed research skills and the
ability to question established ideas.
Career opportunities exist in Teaching, Research, Banking, Journalism, Law, the Civil
Service, Local Government and Management.
