History A Level at Bourne Grammar School
The aims of the syllabus are to stimulate interest in and to promote the study of History:
a) through the acquisition of an understanding and a sound knowledge of selected periods or themes;
b) by consideration of the nature of historical sources and the methods used by historians;
c) through an acquaintance with the variety of approaches to aspects and periods of History and a familiarity with differing interpretations of particular historical problems;
d) by promoting an awareness of change and continuity in the past.
The course involves the study of a range of historical periods in the history of Russia/USSR, Britain and Germany. Three out of the four units are assessed by examinations with one unit in Year 13 by a piece of coursework. Essays, which will be set frequently, need to be well researched, detailed and carefully argued - this involves a considerable amount of background reading, drafting and re-drafting of essays before making a final copy. A Level History is a demanding course requiring dedication and a lively mind. Students will be expected to read widely and think and develop ideas of their own. A knowledge of the ‘facts’ is necessary, but an understanding of ideas, movements, cause, effect and many other concepts is also vital.
