Introducing Caring for Children and Young People (CACHE Level 2 Certificate QCF) at Central College Nottingham

Course description

This course is ideal for learners interested in working in a childcare setting in the future, but not ready for a course involving 2 full days a week on placement as well as 3 days in college. It may also be useful for learners who have completed the Level 2 Introduction to Early Years Education, but not achieved maths and English at the required grades to progress to the Level 2 Introduction to Early Years Education.

Course content

This qualification provides an opportunity to study a range of topics from three main areas:

  • Childcare and Education
  • Babysitting and parenting responsibilities.

It contains all the units included in the Level 2 Award in Babysitting and the Level 2 Award in Preparation for the Responsibilities of Parenting.

Additionally there are units covering learning, development and play. You will also have lessons in maths and English which would either be Functional Skills or GCSEs depending on the grades you have already achieved.

Entry requirements

One of the following:

  • 4 GCSEs at grades A*-D including English Language and Maths*
  • A relevant Level 1 qualification including GCSE English Language and Maths* at grade A*-D

*If you do not have both GCSE English Language and Maths at A*-D, we may accept one of them at Grade E in addition to your 4 GCSEs at A*-D. Functional Skills may be accepted instead of GCSE English and/or Maths. Functional Skills Level 1 is equivalent to GCSE Grade D and Level 2 to GCSE Grade C.

Adults who are aged 19+ without the necessary qualifications are welcome to apply.

You will be in college 3 days a week. All units will be internally assessed using different methods, including observation, a portfolio of evidence, written assignments or tasks set by CACHE. You will also do some work experience, either on a weekly basis or occasional block placements.

Future opportunities

If you achieve at least a GCSE grade D Maths and English or Functional Skills Level 2, you could progress to the Level 2 Introduction to Early Years Education.

Further information

You will need to pay for a DBS check (approximately £45) and a T shirt to wear on placement (approximately £10). You should expect to have to pay for travel to placement.
