Course description

History at AS

This course examines the way in which different governments in the USA and Europe tried to solve the problems that they faced. The course is designed to compare and contrast different forms of government. The AS course should allow the students to promote an understanding of change and development over time.

History at A2

The exam part of this course examines British history in the modern era. The historical enquiry section of the course is designed to allow students to pick a topic and conduct their own enquiry. The A2 course should allow the students to promote an understanding of change and development over time.

Unit 1 USA, 1890 - 1945

This is a written paper. Weighting: 50% of the AS, 25% of the A2

Unit 2 The Impact of Stalin’s leadership in USSR, 1924-41

This is a written paper. Weighting: 50% of the AS, 25% of the A2

A2

Unit 3 The making of Modern Britain 1951-2007

This is a written paper. Weighting: 30% of the total A Level marks

Unit 4 Historical Enquiry.

This is a personal study of approximately 3,500 words. Weighting: 20% of the total A Level marks.

Entry requirements

Previous study of History at GCSE is desirable but not essential

Students should preferably have a B grade in English
