Course description

This is an excellent choice if you have an interest in business or believe that the career you may follow will require some degree of business knowledge. Business studies examines how businesses are set up, develop and grow. This includes the different types of businesses that exist, the objectives a business is likely to set itself, the meaning of profit and the external factors that influence the business, such as the economy or population trends. It also includes the influences on decision-making, such as the role of the leaders and other stakeholders.

Course content

The course offers a broad introduction to the world of business. It includes the following topics:

  • What is a Business? - Management, leadership and decision-making.
  • Marketing
  • Finance - ensuring you have more money coming into your business than going out!
  • Human relations: recruiting and motivating staff
  • Operations management: ensuring that you are working in the most efficient way possible.

In the second year, you will learn about how to analyse the strategic position of the business internally. You then go on to look at strategic choices that any board of directors will consider as well as the role of technology, innovation, and how any strategic change is managed.
