This course is ideal if you would like to try the subject for the first time and complete within a year, or if you have already studied a level 3 course and wish to develop your portfolio / top up UCAS points. Otherwise we suggest you study the Extended Diploma in Media which is a 2 year course providing much more content and experience to build a strong portfolio.

Course content

You will take part in a range of media based activities to build a good understanding of the subject. Projects are arranged by units, with most of the work being coursework based. Each project is designed to give you an insight into a particular skill or specialism. This is very advantageous as it will allow you to try new activities and build different skills leading towards a range of work to show in a portfolio. You will learn the skills necessary to plan, script and direct media projects and use the tools to make them come to life through recording, filming and editing with our specialist resources.

You will partake in work experience opportunities such as live briefs to build your skills in the work place and prepare you for employment.

English and Maths skills are an increasingly important requirement for the workplace. Lecturers will support you to develop these skills as part of your studies. These are mandatory requirements of the course.

The main areas covered on the course include:

  • Video Production (Documentary, Short Film Production plus Music Video)
  • Film and Television
  • Photography
  • Radio Production (Advertising & Drama)

The course also prides itself in producing work for national competitions (Young Film Makers) and you will be encouraged to submit an entry, which will provide an excellent addition to your showreel. Throughout the year we aim to visit the Gala Durham, the radio facilities of BBC Newcastle, and Television Studios at BBC Newcastle.

The year concludes with a public screening of work in screen one of the Durham Gala cinema. You will work on projects both independently and in within groups to develop the teamwork and communication skills necessary to work within the subject.

Entry requirements

A minimum of four GCSEs at grade C and above, or a BTEC Level 2 Diploma in a related subject.
