Mathematics - Core Level 3 at Appleby Grammar School

Course description

Maths is for everyone. It is diverse, engaging and essential in equipping you with the right skills to reach your future destination, whatever that may be.

Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) is a new qualification designed for students who have achieved a grade 4 or above at GCSE and who wish to follow a practical Maths course.

It helps to develop students’ mathematical skills and thinking and supports courses such as A-level Psychology, Sciences and Geography as well as technical and vocational qualifications. It builds upon and strengthens existing skills and focuses on using and applying mathematics to solve problems relevant to everyday life.

Course content

The AQA course has compulsory topics on:

  • analysis of data
  • maths for personal finance
  • estimation and critical analysis of data and models

In addition there are optional models covering:

  • statistical techniques
  • critical paths analysis
  • graphical technique

Entry requirements

We expect our students to have obtained at least a Grade 4 at Maths GCSE. An interest in Maths and its applications is the most important feature.

Assessment

The course is linear and is assessed in two 1 hour 30 minute exam papers in May/June 2018
