Performing Arts BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate at St Brendan's Sixth Form College

Course description

This is a practical course which focuses on developing skills in the three specific performance areas of acting, dance and singing. As well as developing in these three areas individually you also have the opportunity to combine them in a variety of performances, culminating in a full production at the end of each year. Shows have included A Chorus Line, Calamity Jane, Fame The Musical, Singin’ in the Rain, Sweet Charity, Beauty and the Beast, Oliver and Little Shop of Horrors. Now with our newly established partnership with Bristol School of Performing Arts (BSPA), students will benefit from outstanding tuition and guidance both here at college and via the tutors and directors at BSPA.

The Subsidiary Diploma is the equivalent of one A-Level and will be studied over two years. The Diploma is equivalent to two A-Levels, again studied over two years and the Extended Diploma, new for September 2016, is equivalent to three A-Levels and takes the learning and skill development to its broadest level.

Course content

The course is made up of a number of core and specialist units that have been selected to not only enhance your strengths but also to examine and develop skills in areas of performance where you are less confident. In terms of main shows, students will be selected to roles which suit their skills and assessment needs –the expert training and tuition you will receive throughout the course will allow you to become a well-rounded performer in all aspects of peformance.

Entry requirements

  • A minimum of 5 GCSE’s at Grades A*-C or at point 4-9 (including English Language). Level 2 vocational qualifications (e.g. BTEC/OCR) must be a merit grade or above and will count as 1 GCSE equivalent.
  • All students undertake an audition to ensure we enrol you on to the correct programme and design a study programme around your needs


This course is based on 100% coursework. Students will complete a range of assignments in each unit that ensure differentiated opportunity for success. There are a number of enrichment courses that require examination, for example LAMDA grades. Students will be advised and supported through this process as part of their academy programme.

Future opportunities

The Performing Arts courses and Academy programme are designed to develop the complete performer, allowing you to be industry ready upon leaving St. Brendan’s. Careers include performance castings across the UK, in particular the West End, backstage and production roles and design/choreography roles; progression on to HE including prestigious institutions such as Stella Mann, Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, Italia Conti, Bristol Old Vic, Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance, East 15 and Laine Theatre Arts. All students will compile a comprehensive portfolio of pieces and repertoire in preparation for all future auditions and interviews.

As a student of performing arts you will automatically become a member of the Performing Arts Academy. Enrichment is vast and tailored to suit each and every individual. There will be a number of activities that will be deemed compulsory with a vast array of outstanding opportunities in addition that will allow you to work with high profile and industry recognised tutors and stars of the industry.  Please be aware that there will be costs involved as part of the programme. All of which will be published well in advance of payment.
