Further Maths A Level at East Norfolk Sixth Form College

Course description

Taking Further Maths allows you to study a greater breadth of the branches of Mathematics and also explore them in more depth.

Course content

Including the A level Maths, you will take six modules in the 1st year and a further six in the 2nd year.

AS modules: Core 1 and 2, Statistics 1, Mechanics 1 and 2 and Further Pure.

A2 modules: Core Maths 3 and 4, Discrete 1, Further Pure 2, Statistics 2 and Discrete 2 or Mechanics 3.

Mechanics 1 & 2: Describe with maths the motion of objects and how they respond to forces, from cars in the street to satellites revolving around a planet. Learn about mathematical modelling by turning a complicated physical problem into a simpler one that can be analysed and solved using mathematical methods.

Further Pure 1: Looks at some of the more abstract topics in Maths such as Matrices, Roots of Polynomials and Complex Numbers.

Entry requirements

You must have a keen interest in maths and have obtained at least an A grade in GCSE Maths.

You cannot study Further Maths by itself - you must also study A level Mathematics.

Assessment

Awarding Body - OCR

At both AS & A2 there are 3 exams which are equally weighted. Some modules can be swapped with A-level Maths modules to optimise your grade.

Future opportunities

A-level in Further Maths is ideal preparation for a Maths degree or Maths related degree at university. It is vital for studying Engineering & Physics and highly desired for courses such as Natural Sciences, Computer Science and Chemistry. Many Universities ask for lower grades if they know you are studying Further Maths.
