Fashion and Clothing (including Creative Textiles) BTEC National Diploma at Riverside College Halton

Course content

The course is a modular programme, offering you the opportunity of an in depth study into the fashion and textile industry. Students will be instructed in basic fashion illustration, fashion design techniques and fabric recognition. You will also develop a range of skills including pattern making and garment construction as they expand their knowledge base. Optional units allow students to also undertake textile design, embroidered textiles and 3D constructed textiles. Assignments are varied and creative covering futuristic design, club wear, historical influences, creative conceptions and art movements are completed using traditional and digital techniques. All BTEC National students will complete a diagnostic first semester to include general arts skills drawing and painting. These will lead to further NCFE certification. Alongside the core fashion units you will study and develop skills in Design Principles; History of Art & Design (including studies of Fashion Designers); Painting and drawing: and The Use of Computers in Art & Design.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including English, one of which should be design related or BTEC 1st Diploma in Art & Design. You will need to bring a portfolio for your interview.


Assessment is continuous. You will be marked on both practical and written project work, which will provide the evidence on which your grades will be based. There is no formal exam at the end of the course.

Future opportunities

On completion of this qualification you may progress to higher education to study for HND, Foundation Degree or BA(Hons) Degree. Alternatively you may choose to seek employment within your chosen field of study. You will be advised and assisted in your choice of progression by your course tutors.

Further information

You will be expected to provide a basic art kit containing a range of painting and drawing equipment, a sketchbook and plastic portfolio. A list will be given to you at interview. You may also be required to purchase specialist materials for your project work.
