Business Studies BTEC Level 3 Certificate/Extended Certificate at Reigate College
This is a practical course that looks at real life situations and allows students to develop the skills and knowledge required in a modern day business. Students will study topics such as Marketing, Finance and how departments work together to meet the aims of organisations by relating them to case studies of actual businesses and the problems they encounter. This course can either be taken as a one year course leading to a Certificate (one AS Level) or as a two year course leading to an Extended Certificate (one A Level).
This course covers:
- The Business Environment
- Personal and Business Finance
- Introduction to Marketing
- Recruitment and Selection
During the course Students will research companies in the public and private sectors such as the NHS and Waitrose, examining the external impacts on the business' stragegic objectives.
There is a examination on Personal Business Finance, an externally assessed coursework involving a Marketing Plan in addition to coursework on the Business Environment and Recruitment and Selection.
Students need five GCSE passes at Grade C or above (or new Grade 4 or above), including both GCSE Mathematics or GCSE Science at Grade C(or new Grade 4) and English Language at Grade 4 orEnglish Literature at Grade C, or History at Grade C. Students are not required to have studied Business at GCSE to study this course but must have an interest and awareness of the business world.
Students will enjoy this course and do well if they:
- can work independently
- like doing presentations and pitches
- can do independent research
- develop an understanding of how different companies work within the UK
Students should have a general interest in how businesses work. They should also be comfortable with ICT and enjoy group work, problem solving, presentations, working with numbers and meeting deadlines.
This BTEC course is assessed through a series of assignments, including some external assessments.
Business Studies can help students aquire the necessary skills to pursue higher education courses in Accountancy, Finance, Marketing, Human Resources and Banking or apply for Apprenticeships and Sponsored Degree Programmes. A qualification in Business can help set students apart from other applicants, equip them with essential transferable skills and provide the commercial knowledge that will help prepare them for further study and future employment.
BTEC Level 3 Certificate/Extended Certificate Business Studies students have the opportunity to take part in a variety of course related experiences. In the last couple of years, these have included:
- a trip to Blacklands Farm Outdoor Activity Centre
- a one day Marketing Challenge (SATRO) at County Hall, Kingston-on-Thames
- Launchpad event in collaboration with Young Enterprise
- External speakers and workshops
