Biology AS Level at North Lindsey College
This course is delivered in two separate parts. The AS course in year 1 and the A2
course in year 2 leading to a full A Level qualification.
The course builds on the concepts and skills that will have been developed in the GCSE science courses. The biology course is presented in an exciting, relevant and challenging way and teaches the essential principles in contexts that students find interesting. The course emphasises the way in which scientists work and the contributions of science to modern society in a way that underpins the learning and stimulates the enthusiasm of students.
There may be the opportunity to study an additional A-level Human Biology course subject to exam board approval.
AS Unit 1: F211: Cells, Exchange and Transport
Module 1: Cells: Cell Structure, Cell Membranes, Cell Division, Cell Diversity and Cellular Organisation
Module 2: Exchange and Transport: Exchange Surfaces and Breathing, Transport in Animals, Transport in Plants
AS Unit 2: F212: Molecules, Biodiversity, Food and Health
Module 1: Biological Molecules: Biological Molecules, Nucleic Acids, Enzymes
Module 2: Food and Health: Diet and Food Production, Health and Disease
Module 3: Biodiversity and Evolution: Biodiversity, Classification, Evolution, Maintaining Biodiversity
AS Unit 3: F213: Practical Skills In Biology 1
A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade C including a grade C in mathematics and preferably grade B science or biology.
You will be assessed by written examinations and practical assessment.
Progression could be to higher education or employment in a wide range of occupations.
All advanced qualifications, AS, A2 and Applied AS/A Levels earn UCAS points, which contribute to university entry requirements and are valid for the rest of your life.
The majority of students who achieve this qualification progress to university.
