Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector Diploma Level 1 (Foundation Learning) at York College

Course description

This is an introduction to hairdressing and beauty and working as a salon assistant, providing a stepping stone to Level 2 Hairdressing or Beauty Therapy.

The programme of study includes:

Introduction to the Hair and Beauty sector
Presenting a professional image in a salon
Health and Safety in the salon
Shampooing and conditioning hair
Plaiting and twisting
Styling women's and men’s hair
Colour hair using temporary colour
Reception duties
Skin care
Hand care
Basic makeup application
Nail art application
Themed face painting
WorkSkills including team work
Experience of work/ work placement
Functional Skills in Maths and English

Entry requirements

You will require a minimum of 3 grade Es at GCSE. You must also have a good attendance and behaviour report from school. You must have the ability to meet deadlines and work hard. You must be reliable and able to work under supervision and follow instructions.

Assessment

Practical assessment, oral and written questions, written tests online, assignment work and an external written test for Functional Skills.

Future opportunities

You can progress on to the Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing or Beauty Therapy, although the progression route to Level 2 is not automatic. You will need to have successfully completed Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector Level 1 and any course you have been enrolled onto, and if your attendance and behaviour have been good and you have met your deadlines, you will be re-interviewed. Alternatively, you may go straight into a salon as a salon assistant/junior. The course also provides skills transferable to other subject areas.
