Mathematics A-Level at Sowerby Bridge High School
This is a modular course, in other words it is taught in ‘blocks’ that are assessed separately by examination before continuing to the next. Once a number of units have been passed successfully an AS or A level qualification can be awarded. There are units
in Core Maths, Mechanics and Statistics.
In Year 12 you will study three AS units (two Core and one Mechanics). In Year 13 you will study three A2 units (two more Core units plus another Mechanics module or a Statistics module). An AS is awarded once three units have been passed successfully and for an A level you will need to pass all six.
Core Maths is the backbone of Mathematics where you study number, algebra, geometry, calculus and vectors. Many of the questions posed relate to problems in the real world, such as finance calculations.
In Mechanics you really put your skills into context by studying the motion of moving objects - you will find out why your stomach feels strange when you ride in a lift and why an aircraft remains in the air.In Statistics you do a lot more than draw bar charts. You learn to analyse quite complex everyday problems. You will find out how a clothing manufacturer predicts the numbers of each size to produce.
A minimum of 5 GCSE passes A*-C or equivalent in 3 or more subject areas (including a minimum B grade in English).
You could take this course with other advanced level courses to prepare for higher education in areas of Mathematics, related areas such as Engineering, Economics, Physics or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to Mathematics such as an Accountant, Engineer, Financial Adviser or Teacher. The course also helps you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for, especially in the economic and financial sectors.
