Economics AS/A2 at Magdalen College School
The specific aims of the course are to encourage students to:-
Understand the current economic issues, problems and institutions that affect their lives
Develop their understanding of economic concepts and theories and the ability to apply these concepts to appropriate range of issues
Use contemporary issues to develop understanding of relevant concepts
Analyse, explain and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the market economy and the role of government within it
Apply their understanding of Economics to aspects of the recent performance of the UK economy, the rest of the EU and the rest of the world.
If Business GCSE taken must have C or above
Year 1 (AS)
Unit 1 The Market System
Unit 2 Market Failure and Government Intervention
Unit 3 The National and International Economy
Year 2 (A2)

Economics and Leisure
Economics and the Labour Market
Economics in a European Context - Compulsory, Synoptic Unit
A pass at A level Economics is a useful entry qualification to many degree courses in Management Sciences, Media Studies, Journalism, Marketing, Social Science, Geography, Business Studies, Accountancy and Law. It is also useful for careers in Banking and Insurance and many other careers in the financial and business world.
Economics combines effectively with subjects within the arts, sciences or humanities. For anyone considering the study of Economics beyond A2 level it may be advisable to combine Economics with A level Mathematics.
