Course content

The GCE in Health and Social Care has been designed to be delivered through work-related contexts, allowing you to develop an understanding of the diverse and complex nature of the health and social care sector.Why take this course?The GCE in Health and Social Care allows you to build skills as well as technical knowledge.  It gives you a broad base of understanding whilst allowing you to focus on the four specialist areas:¨     Health¨     Early Years (Care and Education)¨     Care of Older People¨     Individuals with Specific NeedsOptions for studying particular groups and needs have been embedded within each of the internally assessed units.Each internally assessed unit consists of an assignment where you study one of the above areas.  However, to give you a balanced programme, it is recommended that at least two areas are studied or all four.The content of the qualification has been devised on the assumption that students will take it alongside other GCEs such as science-based subjects, Psychology or Sociology.At AS level the following units are studied:Unit 1                Effective Caring (external test)Unit 2                Effective CommunicationUnit 3                Health, Illness and DiseaseAt A2 level the following units are studiedUnit 12              Working in Health and Social CareUnit 13              Understanding Human BehaviourAnd one other unit from a range of options
