BTEC Applied Science at Garth Hill College

Course description

If you have a general interest in all three Sciences, then this is the course for you.

We look at the application of Biology, Chemistry and Physics in the real world. This includes subjects such as analytical chemistry skills energy conversions medical physics and genetic engineering.

We consider further questions such as: How do we treat Cancer? What processes are used in Forensic Science? How is insulin made? If this sounds interesting speak to Mr Bromham, Mrs Milner or Miss Flower.

Entry requirements

Btec Subsidiary diploma builds on the knowledge, understanding and process skills you will have developed in GCSE Science. So it is expected that you will have achieved at least GCSE grade C in Science and Additional Science. The qualification integrates theory and relevant practical work. You need to be able to communicate effectively, research and think critically about science and scientific issues and problems. You must also be fairly competent at solving numerical problems. Assessment

Assessment by course work: There are 3 core units and an additional 3 supplementary unit to complete. The pupils will be required to produce a portfolio of work for each of these units

Future opportunities

You what to learn how science is used in the workplace and how this is different to the work carried out in the school laboratory. You want to use science to support other qualifications or progress onto further studies. You would like to demonstrate an ability to work independently on extended work.

    • Garth Hill College Sixth Form is open to all students. We aim to provide high quality education in a supportive, friendly environment. We cater for all abilities and offer a wide range of subjects at Level 3 (Advanced Level) and Level 2, as well as courses which are delivered through our partnership with other local providers. Choosing the courses which are right for you is an important decision. We have a highly experienced team of Sixth Form personal tutors who will be able to provide you with expert advice, guidance and support.
