Course description

The 3 areas of chemistry studied are Physical, Organic & Inorganic.

Course content

Physical - Thermodynamics, Rate equations, Equilibrium contact Kc for homogeneous systems, Electrode potentials & electrochemical cells, Acids & bases

Organic - Optical isomerism, Aldehydes, Ketones, Carboxylic acids & deriviatives, Aromatic chemistry, Amines, Amino acids, proteins & DNA, Polymers, Organic synthesis, NMR & Chromatography

Inorganic - Properties of period 3 elements & their oxides, Transition metals, Reactions of ions in aqueous solution



Entry requirements

Minimum of 5 A* - C grades / grade 5 (new grading structure) at GCSE or equivalent with English & Maths.  Grade B or equivalent in your chosen study subject is preferred.


Course is assessed via 3 written papers including relevant practical skills:

Paper 1 - 2 hrs - 105 marks - mixture of short & long answer questions

Paper 2 - 2 hrs - 105 marks - mixture of short & long answer questions

Paper 3 - 2 hrs - 90 marks - (40 marks practical & data analysis, 20 marks questions testing across specification, 30 marks multiple choice questions)
