Chemistry A Level at JOSEPH LECKIE ACADEMY
The 3 areas of chemistry studied are Physical, Organic & Inorganic.
Physical - Thermodynamics, Rate equations, Equilibrium contact Kc for homogeneous systems, Electrode potentials & electrochemical cells, Acids & bases
Organic - Optical isomerism, Aldehydes, Ketones, Carboxylic acids & deriviatives, Aromatic chemistry, Amines, Amino acids, proteins & DNA, Polymers, Organic synthesis, NMR & Chromatography
Inorganic - Properties of period 3 elements & their oxides, Transition metals, Reactions of ions in aqueous solution
Minimum of 5 A* - C grades / grade 5 (new grading structure) at GCSE or equivalent with English & Maths. Grade B or equivalent in your chosen study subject is preferred.
Course is assessed via 3 written papers including relevant practical skills:
Paper 1 - 2 hrs - 105 marks - mixture of short & long answer questions
Paper 2 - 2 hrs - 105 marks - mixture of short & long answer questions
Paper 3 - 2 hrs - 90 marks - (40 marks practical & data analysis, 20 marks questions testing across specification, 30 marks multiple choice questions)

'A' level Chemistry would complement advanced level qualifications in Biology, Physics, Mathematics, Health and Social Care, Sociology or Psychology. It is also a pre-requisite for Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science etc.
