Design & Technology - Product Design - AS Level at Skinners' Academy
A Level Design and Technology will develop students’ creative skills in the areas of Analytical Research, Product Evaluation, Design and Manufacture. The course also encourages students to develop their independent learning skills, problem solving skills and level of self confidence in the areas of written and visual communication, graphic design and ICT. Students will be making models and prototypes using a variety of materials and techniques. This will be suitable for mass manufacture and use in industry and in industrial design. The AS and A level course will develop a critical understanding of the influences of the processes and products of design activity from an historical and a present day perspective. Developing a cultural and social awareness of design in the environment and its influences. Students’ will learn to apply essential knowledge of understanding and skills of design and design production processes to a range of technological activities and develop an understanding of industrial processes. Develop and sustain their own innovative, creative and design and technology capability, to recognise constraints and to produce high quality products. Assessment The qualification is assessed as follows: AS Level-First Year • Unit 1: Materials and Components -written paper 25% of total A Level mark. Knowledge of materials and there properties, mechanical and physical and means of construction. Health and Safety issues and the environment and the use of ergonomics and anthropometrics in design process. • Unit 2: Coursework: Design folder and a manufactured model and prototype. 25% of total a level mark. Including the effective use of graphics and presentation and ICT skills and design development. Testing and product evaluation and safe working practise.
for AS level – a minimum of 5 GCSE passes at grade C or above, usually with a Grade B or above in the subject to be taken at AS level or in an associated subject. for A2 level – candidates should normally have obtained a pass at AS level, preferably at grade C or above.
Employment in architecture, interior, furniture, display and industrial design and engineering and many of the creative and manufacturing industries.After successfully completing the course students would have access to University Degree courses in architecture, interior, furniture, display and industrial design and engineering and many of the creative and manufacturing industries.
