Health and Social Care (BTEC Extended Certificate Single Award) at Roundhay School All through education from 4 to 18

Course description

This course will enable you to develop knowledge and understanding of a broad range of health and social care services and careers within different settings. It includes units which explore contemporary health topics, such as individual care needs, human development and sociological perspectives in health and social care, whilst also extending skills in communication and interpersonal interaction.

Throughout the course you will develop various skills including research, ICT, evaluative skills, problem solving, developing your own learning, presentation skills, and learning to work independently as well as in groups, which will develop your communication skills. This course will provide you with an up to date and relevant insight into the world of Health and Social Care, and will allow you to develop a wide range of transferrable skills to support your CV or UCAS personal statement.

The Level 3 BTEC Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care (NQF) course offers great flexibility and is broadly equivalent to one GCE A Level, the course represents 360 guided learning hours

Course content

Entry requirements

General entry requirement:

Students should achieve GCSE grade 5 in English Language and Mathematics plus 3 further GCSE grades 9-4 (or grade C in non-reformed qualifications) AND meet the individual subject specific requirements.

Plus Science Grade 4 HSC grade 4 if taken at GCSE

Assessment

 

The Level 3 BTEC Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care has4 Units - 3 Mandatory 1 optional.

The structure of assessment is as follows:

Year 12 –

Mandatory Unit 1 Exam (externally assessed) – Human Development

Mandatory Unit 5 – Meeting individual care needs

Year 13 -

Mandatory Unit 2 Exam (externally assessed) – Working in Health and Social Care

Optional Unit 10 – Sociological perspectives

 

Future opportunities

The BTEC qualification was designed in close collaboration with industry. This means it is a highly respected route for those who wish to move into employment in the Health and Social Care sector, either directly or following further study. The course provides a suitable foundation for the study of Health and Social Care or a related area through a range of higher education courses (e.g. Health and Social Care, Community Health Studies, Nursing and Social Work). In addition, the specification provides a coherent, satisfying and worthwhile course of study for candidates who do not progress to further study in this subject
