General Studies at St Mary's RC High School

Course description

The General Studies course is designed to develop a student with a wide knowledge and skills crossing
all the various disciplines. Students are encouraged to give subjective opinions about a variety of
issues and then use evidence gleaned from other subjects and everyday life to justify their
statements. Mark schemes for the subject reflect the less restrictive and more creative approach of
the course.
AS - Two written papers - each lasting 1½ hours

Unit 1 with a focus upon Culture and Society
Unit 2 with a focus upon Science and Society
A2 - Two written papers - each lasting 2 hours.
Unit 3 with a focus upon Culture and Society
Unit 4 with a focus upon Science and Society

Entry requirements

General Studies is accepted by many universities as a third A-level for course entry and can provide
valuable points in the current competitive climate for university places. The interdisciplinary nature
of the course and breadth of knowledge provided are viewed favourably by university admissions
tutors and employers alike and therefore provide an undoubted advantage in job and academic
applications. Teaching for General Studies is one hour per week.
