Maths A level at Nower Hill High School
Mathematics underpins almost every aspect of modern life. Its applications extend from space exploration to the National Lottery. You’ll enjoy this challenging course if you like solving problems in a logical manner, applying mathematical theories to real life situations and constructing rigorous mathematical arguments. You will develop your ability to reason logically, to construct mathematical proofs and to use mathematics as an effective means of communication.
To study Maths, students must achieve Grade B or above in GCSE Maths. To study Further Maths, students must achieve Grade A or above in GCSE Maths.
All modules are assessed by a 1.5 hour written paper. Core 1 is a non calculator paper.
A2 Mathematics is well regarded as an indication of potential by both employers and universities. It is useful for entry to any higher education course and leads naturally to careers in accountancy, actuarial science, banking, economics and civil and mechanical engineering.
What equipment or materials will I need?
Textbook, all standard stationery, writing materials and folders. You will also need a scientific calculator. (Casio fx83 recommended. Certain calculators with calculus and programming functions are not permitted in the exam).
