Theatrical, Special Effects, Hair & Media Make-up Advanced Diploma at Derby College

Course description

This City & Guilds qualification builds your professional skills in media specialisms. You’ll gain high levels of occupational ability, taking part in work experience in the media industry and developing your independent style through competitions, photo shoots and theatrical work.

Course content

Mandatory units are:

  • Working with colleagues within the beauty-related industries
  • Monitor and maintain health and safety practice in the salon
  • Creative hairdressing design skills
  • Design and apply face and body art
  • Fashion and photographic make-up
  • Media make-up
  • Apply air brush make-up to the face
  • Apply prosthetics and bald caps

There is also a range of optional units.  The hair and beauty team will advise you on the most effective route to build your portfolio of skills.

You will also develop your skills in maths and English, which will support your main programme of study, help your future progression and enhance your life skills.

Entry requirements

You will attend a formal interview and a hair and beauty taster session. There will also be an online screening test in maths and English. GCSEs in Maths and English at grade C or above – or literacy and numeracy at Level 2 – are required.

Assessment

You will be assessed through a range of methods including practical observation, oral questioning, written tests, assignments and preparing a portfolio of evidence.  Maths and English are assessed through a controlled assessment and GCSE involves a final exam.

Financial information

A kit and uniform is required.  Details will be available from the curriculum team during the interviews.

Future opportunities

Further study
You could go on to further study in higher education and courses such as the Level 4 Working in the Theatre and Film Industry, where you will continue to develop your skills in maths and English.
 
Careers
You can work as a make-up artist for the film and TV industry or as a stylist for the fashion industry.
