Physical Education AS and A level at The Emmbrook School

Course description

A-Level PE develops an understanding and appreciation of the factors that enable both the candidate and others to be physically active as part of a balanced, active and healthy lifestyle. It also seeks to improve competence as a performer, coach/leader or official. The factors studied include physiological, psychological and socio-cultural aspects that have an impact on participation and performance in physical activity. Theoretical knowledge is assessed through externally set and externally marked written papers; practical performance and oral responses are internally assessed and externally moderated. Although not necessary to have studied the subject at GCSE, this is strongly advised as previously acquired knowledge of examination PE will underpin learning at this level. A-Level PE enables students to apply for higher education course in Physical Education or Sports Studies.

Course content

AS

Unit 1 An Introduction to Physical Education – incorporates the study of Anatomy and Physiology, Acquiring Movement Skills and Socio-cultural Studies relating to participation in physical activity. This unit is assessed through one written paper (60% of AS Level; 30% of A Level).

Unit 2 Acquiring, developing and evaluating practical skills in Physical Education – requires the student to develop practical competence in two activities, together with the ability to respond orally to live performance in one by evaluating and planning for improvement. This unit is assessed as coursework

A2

Unit 3 Principles and concepts across different areas of Physical Education – where candidates follow modules in Historical Studies, Sports Psychology, and Exercise and Sports Physiology. This unit is assessed through one written paper (35% of A Level).

Unit 4 The Improvement of effective performance and the critical evaluation of practical activities in Physical Education – which requires the student to show practical competence in one activity, together with the ability to respond orally to live performance in the same activity, evaluating and suggesting improvements to the performance observed. This unit is assessed as coursework (15% of A-Level).

Entry requirements

C grade overall at GCSE PE, including the minimum of a C grade on the theory paper. Whilst strongly recommended that potential A-Level students should have studied the subject at GCSE, non-GCSE students would be considered with the minimum of a B grade in Science and a clear sporting background.

Financial information

Course textbooks and exercise books for each unit are provided by the department. Other stationery will need be to be purchased separately. Subscription to the “PE Review” magazine and the purchase of revision materials is optional. Appropriate sports clothing will need to be worn for practical sessions. Students are also invited to apply for Revision Conference places during each year of the course.

Future opportunities

Career opportunities exist in Teaching, Coaching, Sports Science, Physiotherapy, Recreational Management and Journalism. Students considering Sports Science degrees should combine PE with at least one science subject.
