Course description

GENERAL AIMS:

n Make use of tacit knowledge and reflective

practices to work with tasks that are

challenging and often require definition.

n Develop and sustain their creativity

and innovative practice.

n Recognise and overcome challenges

and constraints when working towards the

production of high-quality products.

n Develop a critical understanding of the influences of

the processes and products of design and technological

activities from a contemporary and historical perspective.

n Draw on a range of skills and knowledge

from other subject areas.

n Draw on and apply knowledge, understanding

and skills of production processes to a range

of design and technological activities.

n Develop an understanding of contemporary

design and technology practices.

n Use digital technologies and information-handling skills

to enhance their design and technological capability.

n Recognise the values inherent in design and

technological activities, and develop critical

evaluation skills in technical, aesthetic, ethical,

economic, environmental, sustainable, social,

cultural and entrepreneurial contexts.

COURSE OUTLINE:

AS Examinations

Unit 1 - FOOD1

Materials, Components and Application

50% of AS, 25% of A Level

2 hour written paper.

Unit 2 - FOOD2

Learning Through Designing and Making

50% of AS, 25% of A Level

Coursework - approx. 50 hours

Written (or electronic) design portfolio

Manufactured outcome(s).

A2 Examinations

Unit 3 - FOOD3

Design and Manufacture.

25% of A Level

2 hour written paper.

Unit 4 - FOOD4

Design and Making Practice

25% of A Level

Coursework - approx. 60 hours

Written (or electronic) design folder

Manufactured outcome.

Entry requirements

Sixth Form Entry

Year 12

A Levels

5 A*-C at GCSE, including a C in English + Mathematics,

with a B grade in the chosen subject areas for A Level.

BTEC Level 3

4 A*-C, preferably including a C in English + Mathematics.

BTEC Level 2

2 D grades.

Year 13

Each student’s work is reviewed at the end of

Year 12 and progress into Year 13 is dependent on

satisfactory performance in the examinations.
