Biology at Merchant Taylors' Boys' School

Course description

A very popular A Level choice and taught by four subject specialists, Biology offers a stimulating practical and theoretical course able to prepare students effectively for the wide variety of biological science courses available at university, including Genetics, Biochemistry and Microbiology. It is also taken by those who aspire to courses in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Veterinary Science, although those merely with a curiosity in the workings of the human body and in ecological and environmental matters are very welcome.

Practical work takes place in three well-resourced laboratories and involves observation of biological material, both microscopic and macroscopic, or the planning and carrying out of investigations. Fieldwork complements the work done in class and there are a number of trips run by the department to enhance students’ experience of the subject.

Entry requirements

The department recommends a GCSE grade of at least A in Biology as a requirement to begin the A Level course which offers much continuity with GCSE study
