English Language Level 2 - GCSE at Exeter College

Course description

The GCSE English Language course offers a student-centred approach to learning, while also ensuring that all learners have access to appropriate support and guidance throughout the course. This might be through the provision of supplementary resources to boost exam skills, for example, or by 1-1 support, with learning support specialists if required.

Course content

You will improve your skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening and will have 3.5 hours of lessons per week. The Functional Skills Literacy and Communication are built into the course, although not assessed separately.

We seek to offer an experience of English which meets the maturity and interests of our learners, and tailor the course to match the wider College environment. This means that lessons are active and varied, and we try – wherever possible – to include material and activities that are related to a student’s main college programme.

Entry requirements

You need four GCSEs at Grade D including English Language at D or above.

Assessment

Most lessons are classroom-based and assessment will be carried out through a combination of controlled assessments and examinations. You are also likely to receive a separate grade for your speaking and listening skills. You will also be expected to do approximately 2 hours homework per week. This might be set by your teacher, but could also be self-generated and independent.

Financial information

Approx £25.00 additional costs.

Future opportunities

Typically, students go on to Level 3 courses at college, whether these are in vocational areas or A Levels. Some students choose to do an Apprenticeship.
