Science GCSE at Ormskirk School
Although a final decision is yet to be made, it is likely that all students will study Science Core in Year 10 followed by Additional Science in Year 11. The Additional Science will be similar to the course that students currently study. In Year 11, this may be supplemented by an Additional Applied Science course for students who are less likely to proceed to A-Level Science subjects. Students will follow either the higher tier or foundation tier of Science Core, Science Additional and Science Additional Applied – a higher grade GCSE pass (grade C) can be achieved on either of these tiers. Currently, students achieve two identical grades for Double Award Science, however, under the new system, students will be able to achieve independent grades for GCSE Science Core and GCSE Additional or Additional Applied Science.
You could take this course to prepare for an NVQ Level 1 or 2 in a related subject and depending on your other qualifications, you could progress onto courses leading to the Advanced GCE in Science or Applied Science. With further training, you could go into a job related to science such as a Laboratory Researcher, Science Technician or Pharmacist. You could also go straight into employment as the course is delivered through a work-based training programme, will help you develop the basic scientific skills, knowledge and understanding that employers across the science disciplines are looking for.
