Course description

The field of Hair Styling & Make-Up Artistry is an ever expanding one and this qualification will develop the knowledge and skills that you need to enter this exciting and rewarding industry. The Level 2 Hair and Media Makeup course is ideal if you are interested in gaining a national qualification in Make-Up and would like to eventually pursue a career in the theatre, film or television industry.

At Level 2 you will gain an excellent range of skills which will provide you with a starting point towards a career in the make-up industry. You will be introduced to aspects of hair and media make-up, learning a range of techniques and styles, including dressing hair, applying make-up, photographic make-up and colouring and cutting hair.

Your success and enjoyment of the course is important to us and we train only to the highest professional industry standards in every aspect including salon behaviour and professional ethics; dress code; attendance and punctuality; salon cleanliness, hygiene and maintenance of equipment and tools; salon efficiency and client care as well as the technical skills of a variety of industry services, in order to ensure you are prepared fully for the demands of employment in the industry. Therefore, to be a successful student you will need to have motivation, inspiration and a keen interest in the hair and make-up industry; be a team player and work well on your own initiative; enjoy working with members of the public and be a great communicator and listener with a mature and happy personality.

During your course you will be involved in many events including educational visits, open events, promotional events both in the college and at external venues, charity events, client salon sessions, student and class led events. There will also be guest speakers and industry training opportunities, competitions and a fantastic end of year show.

  • ​Unit 202 - Follow health and safety practice in the salon
  • Unit 203 - Client care and communication in beauty related industries
  • Unit 209 - Apply make-up
  • Unit 210 - Provide eyelash and brow treatments
  • Unit 212 - Create and image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sector
  • Unit 220 - The art of photographic make-up
  • Unit 221 - Body art
  • Unit 223 - Apply skin tanning techniques
  • Unit 226 - The art of colouring hair
  • Unit 227 - the art of dressing hair
  • Unit 310 - Make and style a hair addition

English & Maths is included as part of your study programme at EFC. All students will be working towards a GCSE Grade C in English Language & Maths alongside their chosen subject. If you’ve already achieved these grades, we will work with you to develop your literacy and numeracy skills further throughout the year.

You will have the opportunity to undertake relevant work experience throughout your programme. Your tutor will help you identify the employability skills you need to improve, and our dedicated work experience team will help find a placement that’s right for you.

Entry requirements

GCSEs at D or above in English Language and 3 other subjects—preferably Maths & Science. OR an appropriate Level 1 qualification


On going assessment of your skills and industry standards through observations, assignments and online exams.

      Epping Forest College is the ideal venue to stage your event.

      The College is easily accessed by less then 10 minutes drive from both the M25 and M11 motorways.

      We’re also a 5 minute walk from the London Underground at Debden Station on the Central Line, 
      and we’re a 10 minute cab ride from Chingford Overground rail station.

      Once you arrive at the College there is a free car park with over 250 spaces, 
      as well as designated areas for coaches and other large vehicles.


      Once on site you can have access to our catering facilities (subject to agreement) and a range of rooms, 
      from our Theatre, with 264 retractable seats, to a standard classroom.

      We also have full IT support, and can offer rooms with either Macs or PCs running the latest industry-standard software.
