Bricklaying Diploma Level 2 at Rotherham College

Course description

Build your career in construction and learn a skilled trade with our hands-on practical learning that will prepare you for the construction industry.

Rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, our Construction department hosts first-class facilities, providing you with the perfect foundations to construct a successful career. Whether it’s brickwork, carpentry and joinery, painting and decorating, plastering or plumbing, our industry experienced tutors will support you in moving up the career ladder, no matter what level you start at.

The College has strong links with employers such as Willmott Dixon, and our tools are state of the art, thanks to generous donations from Stanley Black and Decker. Previous students have taken part in the HOPE Strategy project; where Rotherham College teamed up with Rotherham Borough Council and charity Action Housing to help renovate derelict houses into fully functioning, modern homes for vulnerable people. There are fantastic opportunities to showcase your skills at competitions such as SkillBuild, as well as the possibility for your work to be entered for the City and Guilds Gold Awards.

Course content

On completion of Brickwork Level 1, this is the next step to achieving your dream job in the brickwork industry. The Level 2 course will further develop your essential knowledge and skills needed to progress within the brickwork sector.

What will I study?

• To further develop your practical skills and take on more advanced projects such as independent and isolated piers, raking cuts, arch work and cavity walling

• To further develop the use of hand tools and get an introduction to the thin joint walling system

• Gain further knowledge of the construction industry and the role of the bricklayer with other trades

• Functional Skills in maths and English (for those who have not achieved GCSE grades C or above in these subjects)

•The Construction department, which includes trowel occupations (bricklaying), is grade one ‘Outstanding’ for its teaching and learning by Ofsted

•Ongoing assessment of practical and written work

•Short, externally assessed test on each unit
