Biology A Level at Sunderland College

Course description

This course is ideal if you are interested in the biological sciences. If you are enthusiastic and motivated the course will give you an ideal platform from which to launch your career into biomedical sciences, life sciences, forensic science, medicine, dentistry or environmental sciences.


Course content

  • You will study a range of subjects over the two years.

Year 1:

  • Biological molecules
  • Cells
  • Organisms exchange substances with their environment
  • Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms

Year 2:

  • Energy transfers in and between organisms
  • How organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystem
  • The control if gene expression.

Entry requirements

You’ll need a minimum of five GCSEs at grade C or above including grade B (or above) in Biology, another Science subject and Mathematics.

If students have not studied separate science subjects then the course requires at least grade B in Core Science and grade B in Additional Science, as well as a grade B in Mathematics.


On this course you will learn through a combination of lectures, demonstrations, workshops, practical sessions, discussion activities and external visits. Independent learning skills are essential to your progress and you will develop them through wider reading and practicing past exam questions. At the end of your second year you will sit three exams.

    • Washington Campus an award winning campus that is home to Washington Sixth Form and our higher education provision. Located between Gateshead and Washington it was built on the site of the former Usworth School. It was developed to cater for up to 850 people from in or around the Washington area.

      The £10 million development provides an excellent learning environment for both academic and vocational course for 16 to 18 year old students, and also acts as our ICT specialist centre. It's equipped with the latest technology to ensure students experience the same systems used by industries in the real world and to help get them ready to move in to higher education or the workplace.

      Washington Campus is also the base for our higher education provision, providing a range of higher education coursesfor the region, from HNCs and HNDs to foundation and full degrees.

      There are also impressive enrichment facilities at Usworth with on site football and rugby pitches and a rec room fitted with a pool table, Xbox 360 and a chill out zone.
